Name: Jay Klein
Year Graduated: 2002
Degree: Specialized Honours BA, Communication Studies
Current Position:  Founder and CEO, The PUR Company Inc.

Being a student at York taught me discipline and how to expand my thought horizon. During my Communications program, I had great professors who showcased the abilities of thought-leaders, inspiring me to pursue my dreams and make them a reality.
I want to give thanks to Dalton Kehoe. His courses stand out to this day as having been the most influential throughout my student years. You never know where your studies will take you. I have a tremendous appreciation for communication skills both with people and how people are communicating to us.
I feel fortunate and humbled to have been featured in the media with such publications as The Globe and Mail, Notable.ca, Profit 500, Financial Post, and Food in Canada Magazine. I have also partnered with UPS and American Express to share my entrepreneurial journey on their platforms. Some highlights of my career were when I received the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year award in 2014, and in that same year scored the largest deal on CBC Dragons' Den - which still remains the #1 viewed pitch in the history of the show.

Current Position: Associate Creative Director/Art Director of Publicis Toronto

Since graduating from York University, I've been lucky enough to find a career in the field I went to school for: Advertising. Getting my degree in the Communications Studies program really helped excel my knowledge and experience before I enrolled in the Advertising program at Seneca College. The Communications Studies program gave me a good foundation to further my education while still obtaining the degree. Especially in a field like Advertising and Marketing, learning the fundamentals and history on how we communicate as human beings within our society, but also how the media communicates with the public, really helped me grow as a person and as a future advertiser.
One specific course I took that I really enjoyed, and also found really helped shape my understanding of how media outlets tend to communicate in order to shift perspectives, was the linguistics course. It was extremely interesting and eye-opening to not only learn about our English language as a way of communicating with one another, but how perspectives can be manipulated based on simple word choices by journalists and media companies. I would highly recommend taking this class, as the things I learned have made an impact on how I view the world.

Name: Maria Bernard
Year Graduated: 2005
Current Field: Youth Non-Profit Management, Program Development, Communications & Resource Development, Community Engagement
Current Position: PhD Social Work Candidate, York University

Upon completing my undergraduate degree at York, I pursued a B.Ed degree to fulfill my passion to work with and teach young people but then felt a strong desire to return to academia and therefore completed an MA in the School of Communications Studies and Journalism at Carleton. My thesis focused on Canadian multicultural policy and theory and sought to understand cultural identity formation through a discourses analysis of Toronto`s Tamil community`s radio talk shows. In part due to the knowledge and relationships I fostered through my research, I soon stumbled into youth non-profit work within a grassroots Tamil youth organization. I learned an immense deal and was able to utilize my critical thinking and communication skills to strengthen the capacity of various youth focused non-profit organizations in Toronto for over seven years. While I continue to be engaged in youth non-profit work, I am currently a PhD. candidate at the School of Social Work at York. My research engages in a Foucauldian analysis of radicalized youth participation discourses within the Ontario youth services sector. The Communications Studies program at York was a rich learning environment that pushed me to strengthen my critical thinking skills and more. As a first generation immigrant, I did not have the confidence or the social capital to pursue graduate studies. However, through the encouragement and gentle push from Professors such as Anne Maclennan & David Skinner, who helped demystify the academic world, I eventually found the courage to pursue graduate studies. I am grateful for the initiative that they and others took within the department to support my growth and success.I would recommend that students focus on strengthening their critical thinking skills and their oral and written communication skills. The ability to deconstruct complex issues skillfully in a restrictive time span and communicate it effectively to a diverse audience is an invaluable and sought after skill! So hopefully that helps motivate you for the next essay you have to write on McLuhan, Marx or Foucault!

Degree: BA Honours, Double Major, Communication Studies and English
Current Position
: Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Social Media, Purdue University Northwest
Previous position: Postdoc in the Department of Communication, Media & Film, University of Calgary

After graduating from with a double major in Communication Studies and English from York University in 2006, I proceeded to obtain my Bachelor of Education at Brock University, a Masters in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory at McMaster University, and completed a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Toronto in January of 2016. I look back at my undergraduate years at York fondly. I remember being so enthralled by the course, Film & Society, that I decided to complete a second major in Communication Studies, while in my second year as an undergraduate English student. This decision obviously altered my life so profoundly that I am now an Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Social Media at Purdue University Northwest. And although some of my cohort were not too fond of the class at the time, taking Research Methods introduced me to one of my mentors, Dr. Anne MacLennan, who taught the class. I learn and am inspired by Anne, who has been tremendously supportive throughout the years; I value her friendship tremendously. As it stands, I now teach Research Methods here at PNW and attempt to inspire my students in the same way Anne inspired me all those years ago. Undoubtedly, deciding to do a double major in Communication Studies and English was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have nothing but fond thoughts and memories of my time in the Communication Studies program.

Name: Jenny Evans
Year Graduated: 2007
Degree: BA Honours, Double Major, Communication Studies and Women's Studies
Current Position:  Planner, Alumni Events, Department of Alumni Engagement, York University

I graduated in 2007 with an honours double major in Communication and Women’s Studies.  I am currently still at York working in the Department of Alumni Engagement as Planner, Alumni Events.  Farah Kurji and I were co-founders of the Communications Studies Student’s Association while we studied at York.  I really enjoyed studying Communications.  It taught me so much about critical studies of the media which has become more and more important as media becomes increasingly influential in our lives.  It also gave me a good academic base to pursue PR in college which led to an assistant job at the York Foundation and then working my way up to my position now.  I am also currently 25 weeks pregnant and hoping my son will pursue academics at York 😉  I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to study in such a diverse and progressive intuition that exposed me to so many different perspectives.

Name: Samantha Maker
Year Graduated: 2008
Degree: Specialized Honours BA, Communication Studies.
Current Position:  Director, Business Development for TimePlay, Cineplex Entertainment

I took a course, which allowed me to get field experience and as a result got an internship at Sony Pictures Canada. It was that experience, which landed me my first job out of university. For 2.5 years I did public relations at an agency called Allied Marketing and was the publicist for the MGM, and Paramount accounts. I continued to do marketing throughout my career. Currently I am Director, Business Development for TimePlay, an interactive gaming platform most commonly known for being in the pre-show at Cineplex Cinemas. I work with clients to integrate interactive programming into their events or venues. Prior to my current role I led the digital and PR strategy for TimePlay as Senior Marketing Manager.

I really enjoyed Communication Studies at York University. The professors were very passionate and my courses were all engaging and thought provoking. The different areas of focus in the program gave a solid foundation. I particularly enjoyed Global Communication: Contemporary Issues. I gained insights that were meaningful and changed how I consumed media.

Degree: Specialized Honours BA, Communication Studies

Current Position: Product Manager

I left York to work at advertising agencies on clients such as Unilever, Kelloggs, Tangerine, Perrier and San Pellegrino and have recently transitioned into the tech/product space. I now work for a software consultancy, helping our clients from start-ups to enterprise companies build software as well as their business.

What is memorable about my time at York was the care that professors and TAs devoted to me on an individual basis. It's so easy to be lost in a crowd and what I found quickly was that if I put in the effort into my education that there are those on the other side ready to help me reach the next level.

Degree: BA Honours, Double Major, Communication Studies and Anthropology
Current Position: Sr Product Designer at RBC Ventures

Kateryna is working as a multdisciplinary creative, currently as a Senior Product Designer at RBC Ventures, creating digital products that aim to solve common human challenges and augment experiences.

The program helped me build a strong foundation applicable across all of my current practices despite the continually evolving industry trends and technology. Foundation courses are a great starting for developing focus and interest while the more specialized courses help deepen the knowledge and in many cases build empathy for the people we work with and make things for.

Year Graduated: 2010
Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Video Editor for House & Home Media

I had the pleasure of attending the York U Communications program from 2005 — 2010. I was excited about the program for the same reason a lot of other first year students are: I’m studying what I love, and it’s not math!

I didn’t account, however, for the massive positive impact majoring in Comms would have on my life; specifically in my day-to-day interactions with colleagues and clients.

As a video editor for House & Home Media, I rely heavily on my ability to clarify the rationale and goal for a given client.

Being able to speak with confidence about the purpose of a given campaign, the choices I’ve made creatively, and my goals on each project is based in large on the education I received under Anne MacLennan and the rest of the faculty. As far as standout courses, Anne MacLennan’s “Advertising in Society” course seems in retrospect like it should be a foundational program for all York U students, regardless of major.

I too rather enjoyed my fourth year course, “Visual Culture”. It was an excellent transitional course into the workforce; I felt like I had an opportunity to express all I’d learned over the previous years.

Name: Erin Pehlivan
Year Graduated: 2010
Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Associate Editor at With/out Pretend's The Vault,

After graduating from York University's Communications program in 2010, I pursued further education at Ryerson University's Chang School and completed a certificate in Magazine and Web Publishing.

I went on to intern for Air Canada's enRoute magazine and have been published in The Globe & Mail, Maisonneuve, blogTO, She Does the City and more. I also gained experience in copywriting for Hudson's Bay Company, Koodo Mobile and Air Canada, and am now working as a freelance writer and editor. I am currently an associate editor at With/out Pretend's The Vault, which is a literary zine focused on women's writing.

I enjoyed my experience at York and continue to reflect on the courses I've taken to this day. "Media, Publics and Democracy" was a huge paradigm-shifter for me. Professor Patricia Mazepa taught us about the rise of the alt-right and populism, which, back then, I didn't realize were very real movements. Now we can clearly see how they are infiltrating society and impacting the entire world through the power of media.

Probably the highlight of my experience at York was taking part in international programs and having the support of my professors to pursue things like the international student exchange program, where I studied in Copenhagen for a semester, and the international internship program, where I interned in Ho Chi Minh City for a summer. I will never forget these formative experiences and am grateful to have had the privilege to partake in them.

Being a 'comms' major was like taking the red pill and being able to see through the matrix. With a mix of human psychology, social trends, history, economics and politics, having an understanding of communications theory has made me a better parent and a better employee.I have recently received a 6.5 million dollar grant to implement a project focused on mental health with The City of Toronto. The skills and understanding gained within the program helped shape one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I did my practicum at Harbourfront centre and learned much about media engagement. I applied this knowledge to an incident at the university that gained sustained media attention due to some of the concepts I learned in class and the opportunity to apply them at my placement.

I graduated from the Communication Studies program at York University in 2011, and currently works as a Lead, Corporate Strategy at the Town of Georgina. No doubt my interest in government and its role in shaping local culture was sparked by the Politcs, Policy and Media course I took in 2nd year.  The politics and policy stream provides a solid foundation for critical thinking in the civic context. Plus, the field experience I was able to get in 4th year really helped me find work after graduation, and helped me attain a greater understanding of what it’s really like to work in the communication and culture industries.

Name: Brittany Shapovalov
Year Graduated: 2012
Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Marketing Coordinator at York University’s School of Continuing Studies

Several months after achieving my Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies and English, I found work as an Administrative Assistant at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Although this role was not within my communications/marketing field,I gained a wealth of transferable skills that proved to be vital to my current success. After two years of administrative experience, I took a major leap of faith and with no family or professional connections, relocated to Edmonton, Alberta in search of a marketing role. Within a month of moving, I landed an excellent position as Marketing Coordinator with a non-for-profit funded by the Canadian and Albertan government. I now had the opportunity to apply much of what I learned during my time at York, while acquiring new skills like website writing and overall content management, webinar production, project management, and events planning. Additionally, I had the opportunity to earn my Master’s degree in Communication, Media, and Advertising. However, after almost 2.5 years, the loneliness of not having my family nearby loomed. I then returned to Ontario and after many months, managed to once again secure an exceptional Marketing Coordinator role, this time, with the same community that helped to mold me, York University. For the past 7 months, I’ve been with the School of Continuing Studies department, helping to promote our programs and I could not be happier.I’m in an exciting, fast-paced role that continues to challenge me and expand my expertise. I’m still fairly junior in my career, but my education and experiences are preparing me for a promising future.I would describe the Communications Studies program at York as ‘comprehensive’. It offers a wide-range of specializations and opportunities for prospective communications professionals. The course that is most prominent in my mind is COMM 1310,“Introduction to Communications”. Students were provided with an all-encompassing view of the communications field which touched on everything from advertising techniques to possible career paths. This course was essential to understanding the industry and recognizing its importance to society.

I loved the interdisciplinary approach in this program. I took a number of courses that helped me to get a well-rounded view of the world. The real learning experience was during the seminars where we were encouraged to explore topics in depth, challenge our taken for granted beliefs, and learn how to communicate with many different people with diverse worldviews and personalities.

Name: Phil Darlington
Year Graduated: 2013
Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Weather Specialist Global Edmonton

I was interning for a few months after graduation, when I got a call back for a Video journalist position in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I spent almost two and a half years there covering every imaginable story. From crime and court cases, to natural disasters, to business, and human interest pieces. Shortly after I began, a weather anchor left, and I auditioned for the role. I got it, and performed the role of Weather Anchor as well as Video journalist until I was called back by CTV Regina. I moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in early 2016 and worked as the CTV Morning Live Regina Weather specialist for two and a half years. Not only was I doing weather on the morning show, but I was also a co-host, and I conducted interviews during the live three hour daily show. I left the show in the summer of 2018 for an opportunity With Global Edmonton, as a Weather Specialist. My Current role has me on the 11 O'clock show, but I also cover weather stories, as well as do live field reporting for the 5 and 6 pm shows. The Communications program at York University was an obvious add on to my diploma from Seneca College in Broadcast Journalism. Overall I did not realize it at first, but my time spent getting the degree opened up my mind to understand how and why journalists, viewers, and broadcasters write, create, act, and react to stories and news. It also gave me a platform with which to see the media from the point of view of an advertiser. For my current role, or should I ever work in marketing or communications it, combined with my years in media, make for a powerful set of tools.

Life After Post Grad: Making the most out of your University experience is vital to how your post graduate experience will be. This involves as much volunteering and interning experience as possible in order to gain the personal and professional skills to be considered a valuable employee. Before being accepted in the internship program, I interned with a start up fashion app at DMZ, and then spent a Summer interning with HMV Canada as their Marketing Intern. The internship course at York was so valuable as it allowed me to have the additional hands on media experience and make connections with people within the industry that I was hoping to pursue a career in. I was fortunate enough to land the internship at Sony Pictures Releasing Canada as their Publicity and Promotions intern. I was involved in spearheading grassroots and college/university promotions, including researching brainstorming, building relationships with key contacts and organizations and acting as the key liaison in the planning and implementation of cross promotions. I was utilizing social networks to build online awareness, as well as track activity for upcoming releases, assisting in the planning and execution of Toronto advance promotional and press screenings and special events. Being involved with the different vendors that Sony works with, I was offered a position before I graduated with their Licensing and Promotions agency. Impactful Courses: A course that has a special place in my heart is the 'Children, Media, Education & Change' conducted by Professor Natalie Coulter. We participated in collaboration with The Spot, a youth program offered at the Jane/Finch Community & Family Centre to conduct a workshop on ‘The Digital Footprint’. We were able to learn about the direct affect that the media industry has on younger generations, directly from their own opinions. Not only did this course educate me, it also sparked a part of me that realised how important it is to give back to your community.

Name: Jaspreet Grewal
Year Graduated: 2014
Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Sports Agate Editor: The Canadian Press + Editor: The Toronto Star (Digital Desk)
Timeline following graduation (2014-present):
  • Worked in retail
  • Pursued a job at RBC as a Banking Advisor
  • Switched to the insurance industry not long after (Intact)
  • Decided, after three years, to return to school for the Sports Journalism Graduate Program at Centennial College (2017). The best decision of my life
  • Hired by The Canadian Press immediately following Sports J school
  • Next? To continue to test my mettle in the journalism industry despite witnessing many close friends and mentors affected by downsizing

My time at York University afforded me the opportunity to truly understand the trajectory of journalism and how it fits into the ever-changing landscape of media and mass communication. Four years ago, as a student in the Communications program, I had the pleasure of helping coordinate, edit and publish York University’s inaugural Communications Academic Journal, Impressions, which was an exhaustive but gratifying experience that truly opened doors for me in the real world. From coordinating with fellow editors (classmates) in our improvised newsroom to using InDesign to help bring an intangible idea to life — the entire process provided me a glimpse into how things operate in an actual newsroom setting and how vital communication is to the success of an organization.

I can say today, with much regret, that it was something I was not appreciative of at the time (I was young, uninvolved, and still figuring out what the heck I wanted to do in life). Looking back, I could not recommend experience enough. It was well worth it.

Professor (and now, Chair!) Anne MacLennan was incredibly gracious with her time during my four-year stint at York (yes, she was my professor for more courses than one), and she was continuously pushing her students to forge ahead and to make something of ourselves. She was, and certainly still is, the single most inspiring teacher, mentor and adviser that I have ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with. It’s fair to say that I certainly would not be where I am today if not for her kind heart and eagerness to see her students excel.

For that, I am forever grateful.

In 2014, I graduated from York University with a Bachelors Degree in Communication Studies. Since then, I have worked for many different companies and organizations in marketing and communication roles with a focus on social media and corporate communications. Most recently, I graduated from George Brown College with a certificate in Social Media Marketing and am currently pursuing additional communications certification. One of the most important courses I took during my time at York University was the co-op course I had with you in my final year. It not only taught practical work skills, but it allowed me to gain hands-on experience in a professional work environment. This class was highly interactive, providing many opportunities for peers to showcase their skills and learn from one another. After the course ended, my contract with one of my placements extended which helped me gain more experience before entering into the work field. I highly believe that my experience at my placements during this period provided me with an advantage when I graduated.

Priya (pronouns they/them) graduated from Comm Studies in 2014 and went directly into York's joint Communication and Culture Master's degree program. They've been featured online (print and film interviews, podcasts, zines) speaking about their specialised research in fan studies and cosplay. They are currently an Account Manager downtown, and facilitate community arts workshops part-time!"I loved critically analysing ads and the coursework in Advertising and Society with Dr. Anne MacLennan, the Directed Reading option, as well as the Field Placement option. Degree: BA Honours, Communication Studies
Current Position: Marketing Manager at PSR Brokerage

After graduation I left my position as Campus Representative at Warner Brothers Canada and started a full-time position as a Social Media Associate at a marketing company called ChizComm Ltd. in North York. During my (almost) 3 years at the company, I helped to grow the Digital Marketing department from 2 to 12 associates and consequently climbed the ladder from Associate to Director. I am constantly hungry and eager to learn more, so I made the difficult decision of leaving the company to pursue a more dynamic position at a real estate brokerage downtown as Marketing Manager. I've also spent time traveling some of the UK/Europe, which I highly recommend. Either take the time to do either during school (one of the exchange programs) or after graduation. You won't regret it.The Communications program at York gave me the skills and background knowledge I needed to enter the Marketing space confidently and with great promise. One of my favorite courses was the 2nd year Advertising course with Natalie Coulter. She was knowledgeable, warm, open to all ideas and kept every class interesting. Also, it is vital that you check out the Communication Studies Students Association. I spent all 4 years of my time at York as a member of this group, first as a Public Relations Coordinator and lastly as a Co-President in 2015. You get the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry at panels on campus, visit media outlets downtown and receive seminars on all things Communications from Journalism to PR. Being a member of the CSSA allowed me to make friends and network with classmates that I am still in contact with today. If it is still around, join!

Current Position: Canadian Marketing Specialist at Spin Master
During my time at York University, I wanted to ensure that I would be set up for success when I graduated from the program. In order, to do so, I completed two internships while at York, one at Alberta Golf and another at MKTG (formerly S&E Sponsorship Group). I had a high interest in sports marketing (and still do) and wanted sports to be my focus for my career. I took a sports marketing class at York taught by Liz McDonald, who was the VP of Marketing at Toys“R”Us Canada. With a connection to Liz, she provided the path to start my career, where I was the Marketing Coordinator at Toys“R”Us Canada and I will forever be grateful for her willingness to help students. I wanted to continue to grow my career and gain experience in advertising and media, from there I worked at Starcom as a Media Assistant working on the eOne account. Having worked in media and traditional marketing, I wanted to seek a role where I would be able to fulfill both interests. I currently work at Spin Master where I am the Canadian Marketing Specialist and handle all aspects of marketing for Canada, from in-store events to media and everything in between. I am extremely thankful to have had three very robust careers in three years, mostly due to a lot of hard work, continually building relationships and some wonderful mentors.
